Understand the thinking behind the pattern
You’ve sewn it carefully. Why doesn’t it fit?
You can follow a sewing pattern. But sometimes the neckline gapes, the bust feels tight or the sleeve pulls. You try an adjustment, yet you’re unsure whether you’ve found the cause. Choosing a different size doesn’t always solve it.
A sewing pattern is a starting point. It can’t account for every detail of your body. Understanding how the pattern and your body work together helps you decide what needs to change.
Stefan will show you his approach, using a sewing pattern and a test garment:
Read the pattern
Discover what the grainline, darts, bust point, waistline, hipline, armhole and sleeve can tell you about the finished garment.
Assess the fit
Learn how to assess wrinkles, diagonal drag lines, gaping and seams that sit in the wrong place.
Find the cause
See how Stefan works out whether the garment needs more room, or whether the issue comes from its length, the position of key points, the fit through the shoulders or back, or its overall balance.
Adjust and check
See how an observation leads to a specific pattern adjustment, and how to check whether that adjustment has worked.
You’ll leave with a way of thinking you can apply to your next sewing pattern.
Three questions for your next sewing project
Which pattern size should I start with?
Do your measurements fall into different sizes? Learn how body measurements, finished garment measurements and ease — the difference between the two — help you choose your starting pattern size.
What is the fit really telling me?
A test garment can tell you much more than “too tight” or “too loose.” Through practical examples, you’ll see how length, width and seam placement affect one another, making it easier to understand what you’re seeing.
What should I check after changing the pattern?
Watch Stefan transfer selected adjustments to the paper pattern, then check the shape of the lines and the lengths of seams that will be sewn together. You’ll understand what to check before you move on.

Stefan Wimmer has spent 45 years in bespoke tailoring and carried out more than 30,000 fittings. He has fitted garments for many different body shapes, always asking the same question: what needs to change so this garment fits better?
During the live class, he’ll explain what he sees, what he checks first and why he changes a particular line. You can follow his reasoning step by step and experience his way of teaching.
He’ll help you understand the connections that sewing instructions often leave unexplained.

Time to watch, understand and ask questions
Our previous live events brought thousands of sewists together to make a garment.
This time, we’re trying something new. You can give your full attention to watching Stefan work, understanding his decisions and asking your questions in the live chat.
Stefan will demonstrate with a real sewing pattern, a prepared test garment and examples at different stages of the process.
You’ll see the important steps without waiting for every piece to be cut, basted or sewn together.
Here’s what to expect

- Practical examples covering size, fit, balance, the bust, shoulders and sleeves.
- Adjustments demonstrated directly on the paper pattern.

Your questions, answered
How much sewing experience do I need?
If you know your way around your sewing machine and have already sewn a few garments from patterns, this class is for you. You don’t need any experience with pattern adjustments.
Is this suitable for complete beginners?
You’re welcome to join and listen, and Stefan will explain many of the basics along the way. The class is mainly designed for people who have already sewn their first garments and now want to understand patterns and fit more clearly.
Will I be sewing along?
This is a demonstration class. Stefan will work with a prepared pattern and test garment, so you can focus on watching, understanding and asking questions. You won’t need to sew a garment during the event.
Do I need a particular pattern or any materials?
No. There’s nothing to buy, cut out or prepare. You only need a device with internet access. A pen and paper are optional if you’d like to take notes.
Can I watch it later?
Yes. You can join at any point during the live class, and the replay will be available for seven days after the event. That gives you time to catch up on anything you missed and watch explanations again.
Can I ask Stefan about my own fit issue?
You can ask questions in the live chat. You’ll need to be signed in to YouTube to post a message. Stefan will address selected questions during the class. We won’t be able to offer individual fittings or answer every question during the event.
Why is this class free?
It’s a chance to get to know Stefan and the Tailor Academy’s approach to teaching, while learning practical ways to understand patterns and fit. You’ll also hear how you can continue learning in our courses. The event is free, with no obligation to buy anything.
